The MOSS Organic Soft Clip Fuzz from the PNW
This Spring we are celebrating the green up after a very wet el-nina year of relentless rain here in Oregon with something a little different! The MOSS is a soft clipping fuzz pedal that exhibits extremely rich and complex harmonics without totally destrying your guitar or the feel. In fact, the MOSS can even be run as a touch senstive low gain overdrive/fuzz at lowest gain settings (see the demo page for audio samples)! Dont let the term "soft" throw you off, this pedal can get massively thick, wall of fuzz sounding tones but without the tempermental buffer sensitivity, impedance or noise floor issues most fuzz pedals have. It's easy to dial with incredible "Pumpkins" style power chords or infinitely sustaining violin muff like tones in the neck postion, however this is no muff rip off.
Origin Story
when Nate told me he was experimenting with our core circuit to try to make a Triple Rect style pedal, I actually rolled my eyes! When he actually brought this circuit into the PettyLab and we plugged it in my studio rig there was a moment of mixed reaction. First of all, this one's no Mesa, but it sounded awesome with certainly more gain on tap then our overdrives and a much more complex harmonic structure. It only took a couple minutes of playing with the knobs and I realized this was a very special circuit, most akin to a Muff style pedal but also very much it's own flavor. I started looking at the circuit and how Nate had accomplished this wizardry and found an ecclectic mix of 9 different diodes arranged in both feedback and shunt positions. He had combined two different soviet era, rare germanium diodes as well as two types of silicon diodes, one current and one NOS, in easily the most complex array of clipping diodes Ive ever seen in ten years of designing pedals! He selected a pair of authentic JRC4558 opamps running on 18v, and after much investigation I decided his choice was the best. I can honestly say I dont think I would have ever gotten to this combo myself, but Im absolutely hooked! Easily I can say Nate had created my favorite fuzz pedal I've ever played. Somehow, stumbled upon a fantastic circuit that responds equaly good to strat, tele, less paul and even my PRS Baritone with P-90s, that feels as good as it sound.
Tone Description via Ambiguous Tone Words
If you made it this far, just know I think you should go listen to the samples on the demo page. But, perhaps you can't listen where you are right now so I will attempt to describe how this pedal sounds. The MOSS generates harmonics by a complex combination of two types of soft clipping. Silicon diodes asymetrically arranged in the feedback loop of a Gain then feed a high headroom soft clipping array of four germanium diodes, 2 D18 and 2 D9E, plus two more NOS silicon diodes. Somehow, this produces the smoothest, yet harmonically complex breakup that Ive ever heard. It is both soft and fuzzy, strange I know. Crank the gain to around max and you'll have yourself a fuzz that is reminiscent of a muff style circuit but somehow more open and organic with a softness still, perhaps think of it as a less angry muff. If you tighten up the lows it moves from Muff style fuzz into a blend of amplike overdrive & distortion depending on how you play your cards, however it still retains the fuzz like character and it never fully escapes the rhelm of fuzz. I also find the low gain settings particularly fun, like a low gain fuzzy edge overdrive, more complex then our standard overdrive but also feels great for chords, and cleans up with dynamics nicely.
CORE Series Simplicity
The CORE Series features a streamlined control set for quickly dialing in killer tones with four knobs to adjust Level, Gain, Lows and Highs in a custom painted sleek Gorva pedal enclosure.
CORE Series Dual Rail Power
We designed the CORE Series with a dual rail doubling power supply. This design can scale from +/-7v to +/-18v, effecting the headroom, tone and feel of the pedal, achieving up to four times the headroom over standard 9v pedals. The internal supply achieves this by mirroring whatever input voltage you apply via the external power supply and we always encourage people to experiment. Requires clean power supplty of 7-18v with minimum of 100mA of current.
CORE Series Quiet Bypass
Our entire CORE Series features our quiet bypass switching system. It is a true bypass, relay based system for minimum pop when engaging the effect.
